Organic Goji 100 (32 oz)
Genesis Today’s Organic Goji 100™ is our dark, distinctive Goji juice created solely from sun-drenched, ready-to-burst Goji berries. Goji berries are native to the Himalayan region of Asia, flourishing on tall shrubs with vine-like branches.* Goji is a true treasure in many Asian cultures and festivals are held to celebrate the berry’s annual harvest. Organic Goji 100 supports a positive mood and is fondly called the “Happy Berry.” Each serving delivers 30g of organic goji providing a natural source of antioxidants, polysaccharides, and phytonutrients.
The goji berry is a small, reddish-orange berry which grows on small shrubs in the valleys of the Himalayan mountain regions of Tibet, Mongolia, and China. Goji has been used in traditional Asian practices for over 3,000 years and is so esteemed that festivals are still held in honor of the goji berry every year!
It’s been an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. It’s inspired tales that seem to defy explanation – like the legend of a “Happy Berry” brought seekers to a tiny Himalayan village inhabited with lively but elderly locals.
The village shared a single water well which was covered in unruly, twisting goji vines which dropped ripened berries into the village’s water source and supported the locals’ health and happiness.*
What is known is that despite their tiny size, goji berries are absolutely wrapped up in beneficial nutrients. But be careful because there are two similar, but very different species of goji berry.
The Two Species of Goji Berry
There are two different species of goji berry: L. barbarum and L. chinense. The species officially recognized by TCM is L. barbarum. L. barbarum grown in the Ningxia Province is considered to provide the most authentic goji berries (based on growing conditions, production history, etc), and therefore, better goji berries than other regions.
This theoretical concept has been backed up with modern science. Goji berries from Ningxia Province has been demonstrated in two separate studies to contain higher amounts of active ingredients and nutrients.
But what about L. chinense?
According to a study of their saccharide composition, sweetness, and betaine levels, L. barbarum is superior to L. chinense for every marker.
The bottom line: make sure you’re getting the tried and true goji berry: L. barbarum.
Selection is Everything
When you go to the grocery store to buy produce, you don’t just put the first head of lettuce you pick up in your cart. You grab one that’s about the size you need, check it to make sure it’s green everywhere, and squeeze it to see how firm it is.
We’ve already ensured we’re getting the best variety of goji berry. We exclusively use L. barbarum from the Ningxia Province – the authentic goji berry.
However, we don’t stop there.
Our goji berries are hand-picked and hand-selected to ensure they’re at the absolute height of ripeness – in the same manner that you pick your fruits and vegetables for dinner. If they’re not ripe, they’re left on the branch until they’re perfectly plump.
Once they’re picked, our berries are carefully handled and juiced. Our Organic Goji 100 is then flash pasteurized to preserve the nutrients.
Most juice companies unwisely throw away the skin and seeds. After all, those parts don’t contain sugar, so they don’t add much to the taste. But they’re incredibly important. In many fruits and vegetables, the all-important carotenoids and other phytonutrients gather in the skin.
Benefits of Goji Berries
Of course, goji berries support a positive mood. With a name like “happy berry”, you’d expect that much. But there’s more.
Lycium barbarum contains the highest levels of five specific polysaccharides. It’s so important, they were named after it. Clinically, they’re known as LBP1, LBP2, LBP3, LBP4, and LBP5 (LBP stands for Lycium barbarum polysaccharide). These polysaccharides support your immune system and energy levels.*
Goji berries contain naturally-occurring antioxidants. More specifically, they contain zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that is well-known for supporting eye health.
How to Use Goji 100™
A staple of indigenous diets for centuries and is still revered today for its support of a positive mood, the Goji Berry has earned its reputation as the “Happy Berry.” Goji berries grow near the awe-inspiring Himalaya Mountains. These deep orange berries flourish on long vine-like branches and are a celebrated food in many Asian cultures. Harvested whole and sun-ripened, the semi-tart fruit has been known to inspire happiness and good health.
Genesis Today picks Gogi berries whole at their sun-ripened peak and prepares them in the Asian tradition for their products. The dark, delicious juice extracted from these berries has been encouraging positive moods in people for centuries and can now be applied to number of daily nutritional diets.
