Noni, also known as Mordina citrifolia, is an almost mystical fruit. The ancient Polynesians revered it so much, it was one of two dozen plants they brought with them on their canoes.

The journey from South Asia to the South Pacific islands is precarious at best in a canoe battling against the harsh ocean. Space is at a premium, so only the most beneficial plants were taken on the long, difficult journey.

Thanks to the original travelers, noni trees are now plentiful across the subtropical South Pacific islands. They grow in the mineral rich volcanic soil—oftentimes right in the cracks of lava flows.

Noni grows year-round in the perfect weather of the South Pacific. As such, noni fruit is constantly in different states of maturity. This picture shows noni that are ready to be picked and others that still need more time on the tree. Each noni fruit is hand-picked at the height of ripeness and not a moment sooner.

Since the island is so small, there isn’t room for massive noni farms. Instead, members throughout the community grow noni trees. Our growers take a stick fitted with a net and coax their perfectly ripe organically-grown noni fruit off of the tree branches.

Once picked, the noni are gathered and are carefully inspected. Only the highest quality noni fruit are kept to be fermented in the same manner they have been for hundreds of years.

How Noni is Fermented

The ripe noni are put into a vat where they’re layered with leaves from the tree and allowed to ferment for several weeks – to produce time-honored noni juice – the very same noni juice that prompted Polynesian wayfarers to carry noni plants with them on their canoes.

Once the fermentation has finished, the juice is drained and the remaining solids are dried out. Some companies unwisely discard the solid parts and only focus on the juice.

However, Genesis Today grinds up the dried-out solids (seeds, pulp, skin and the noni leaves) and puts the resulting powder into the juice. The seeds and skin are where most nutrients reside in plants. Including the powder in the juice ensures you get the entirety of noni’s nutrients.

Noni has been used for thousands of years by the Polynesians to support their health. Yet, it remained relatively unknown to the Western world until recently.

Originally just found in Australia and Indonesia, the Polynesians revered and relied on noni so much that they brought it with them wherever they went—which is why its range now spans across the South Pacific islands. The sharp-tasting noni fruit is believed to support healthy digestion and detoxification and has been used in traditional practices throughout the South Pacific for thousands of years.*
Noni is harvested by hand with a stick to prod the fruit loose from the tree until it falls into a small net attached to the stick. After the noni is harvested, it is aged and made into liquid before being flash pasteurized to retain the quality and flavor.
